Specialty: Here, it is believed that Goddess Nithyakalyanai blesses everyone in the form of Sridurga, Srilakshmi and Srisaraswati.

Goddess Parvathi had taken an avatar to kill the demons Shumban and Nishumban. At that time Goddess Parvati's golden complexion turned dark and she did severe penance at this place. Brahma appeared before him and blessed and Parvathi’s golden complexion was restored and also gave her the name Nithyakalyani. Here the goddess was in an east facing shrine and in a fierce form . In order to perform pooja to her, rules has to be strictly followed. Even if there is a small issue in the form of worship, it is said that the one who did performed the pooja might face problems. Due to this, people feared to go near the temple. Later, after much deliberation, Ambal's idol was placed in a south-facing shrine. Of the sixteen arts in Ambal's statue, fifteen were separated and invoked on a pedestal. This pedestal came to be known as ‘Dharani peedam’. With one among sixteen art forms, Ambal become a calmer form and priests started with their worship. Since the Goddess appeared here as Nithyakalyani, it is considered thatshe bestows boons at any time of the day. It is believed that the Goddess blessed the spouse with long life when prayed to her, she is worshipped by offering saree and vermillion.

Once Brahma meditated rigorously upon Shiva and the Lord appeared before him and gave him a
vilva fruits and Brahma cut this into three pieces. He planted each of these pieces, one at Mount Kailash,
one at Mount Meru and one at Dhuvathasantha forest near Podhigai. Dhuvathasantha forest is today's
Kadayam. Goddess Parvathi did rigorous penance in this forest and Lord Shiva appeared as Vilva tree.
Hence, the vilva tree present here is worshipped as the Lord himself.

A great war took place between the Devas and Kambasura. Devendran called Dasaratha, the emperor of
Ayodhya for help. Dasaratha killed the demons. Due to which he got Veerahati Dosha. To get rid of this
dosha he worshipped Vilva nadhar in this temple. With Lord Shiva's blessings, he was blessed with
SriRama who is an avatar of Narayanan as his child.

Once, Dasaratha was hunting in the forest. Then a boy named Sravanan carried his blind parents through
the forest in a cradle. The parents were thirsty. After placing them in one place, he came to fetch water
from a pond. Dasaratha, who heard the noise of the water, thought it was some animal and shot an arrow
in the direction of the noise. It pierced the boy and he fell there. Dasaratha was shocked upon seeing this.
He apologized to the boy's parents. However, the boy's parents cursed Dasaratha and said, "Like us, you
too will suffer from grief of parting your son." Later, they also died from the grief of losing their son.
Dasaratha immediately worshiped this Vilva Vananathar and asked forgiveness for his sin. According to
legend, this is the place where this legendary incident took place. To prove this, there is a cave in the area and a stone near it. Sculptures are painted on the rock near this pond. The scene of the killing of the boy at the door of the temple is also depicted in the sculpture. A statue for 63 Nayanmars has been erected and Sravana's statue is also placed near them.

It is also said that Lord Ram bathed in the river and visited this Vilvavanatha. Even today,
the Tattvasara river here is also called Ramanadi. Father and son worshiped in this
Nitya Kalyani Sametha Vilvavananathar Temple of Kadayam. Sculptures related to Ramayana
can also be seen in this temple. This temple was built by Vikrama Pandyan about 800 years ago.
This Lord is also worshiped by the names Kaliyuga Rameswaramudayar and
Dasaratha Rameswaramudayar.
