Yet another specialty is a pillar which has sculptures of Goddess Garbharakshambikai who is worshipped for childbirth/ conception and Kalyana Ambal in bridal attire worshipped for marriage.
Vaneeswarar temple was built by the Pandya King Maravarman.
During the Dwapara yuga, Saptharishis performed a yagna, to put an end to the fire that destroyed humans. However, Agni out of fear from losing his powers, put an end to this yagnam. This angered the Saptharishis. Due to fear of getting cursed by the saptharishis, Lord Agni hid himself in the river near the temple in disguise of a fish. However, all the other fishes stayed away from Agni, due to which the Saptharishis identified him and cursed him. Lord Agni lost his powers, later on the advice of Rishi Sudhama (Lord Shiva’s great devotee) , Agni went to Mount Kailash and made a Shivalinga and started his penance which helped him come out of the curse. It is said that the Lord here was installed by Lord Agni himself and hence is named as Agneeswarar. The place where the linga is installed is known as Agni theertham.
