In the olden days justice was upheld and man lived in accordance to God's will.

A king of the state of Kerala was suffering from an incurable disease due   to karma of his previous birth. Considering his good deeds, the Lord   gave  him a solution as a voice from the skies. The king was asked to   make a doll made of sesame seeds and transmit his disease to it and   donate to a brahmin. A poverty stricken Brahmin Offered to buy it. The   king gave the doll to the Brahmin and along with it he offered other   riches. The king alleviated his poverty by offering gold coins, gems etc.

The sesame doll came to life and told the Brahmin to give half the benefits of Gayatri mantra that the Brahmin chanted all these days. Once the doll got the benefits, it disappeared.

The brahmin who did not know what to do with the wealth given and handed over the wealth bag to the temple priest. After giving up, he went to Pothigai hills to seek the advice of Agastya Maharishi. The priest who wanted to usurp that wealth, bound the Lord’s power with a mantra and tied it up in a "tamarind tree" near the temple. The Lord appeared in the brahmin's dream and told him about the events that took place. The next day the Brahmins gathered the council and asked for justice in the presence of the king. The priest swore upon the Lord that he did not do such a deed and proceeded towards the main deity. The brahmin stopped him and forced the priest to swear on that tamarind tree.

The priest did it out of no other choice. This angered the Lord   and he burned the priest. Seeing this, the Brahmin felt sorry   for  the priest and begged the Lord to revive him.
The Lord was thus named as 'Ertithada Kontar' - the Lord who   is quick to execute the needs of the devotees. Post this event   the Lord could not control his rage and appeared in the form   of  Rudhra and to bring his rage down, Parvathi and Vishnu   appeared. This is the reason of why Vishnu's shrine is seen   near the main deity in this temple. Then the brahmin who got   that wealth used it to build the Kannadiyan Canal.

Specialty in this temple:
If people who have problems in matters of purchase and sales worship at this place, the Lord will help them find a solution.

Marakathampal, who resides here, bestows an ocean of mercy to her devotees, hence it is called "Ambasamutra".

The lingam here is said to have appeared from the yagam done by "Kasyapa Maharishi", one of the Saptha Rishis. Hence the name Kasipanathar.

Lord Nataraja who blesses here has got the name "Phunugu Sabapati". Pujas are performed for him only on the tamil month of thai that coincides with Thursday and poosam star. In the tamil month of Aipasi, the celestial wedding of Maragathambal and Kasipanathar is celebrated.
