When SriRama reached Tamil Nadu in the southern direction in search of Sita Devi and was standing on a rock in the middle of the Kadana river running near Pappankulam village searching for hunter Sampangan who was hiding. Lord Shiva then appeared as a bright light in the Madawar complex and showed Sri Rama the place where Sampagam is located.

Appearing as a light and having helped, Lord Shiva was named by Sri Ram as Karutheesar.

Even today, Thiruvadi and Chakra are engraved on the rock where Sri Rama stood in the Kadana river and is known as ‘sarkaraiparai’.

                                                                                           Feet of Lord Rama

Adi Kovil is the place where Lord Rama came under the tamarind tree in Kadana river. Evidence of the construction of this temple by the Pandya king Maravarman I in the 12th century is clear from the inscriptions.

The paintings adorning the sanctum sanctorum and artha mandapam in Sri Ramapiran temple are painted with paint extracted from pachilai herb. Here the scenes of some of the 108 Vaishnava shrines, avatars of Thirumal, avatars of the Alvars have been painted with great vividness during the Pandyan dynasty. The Nayaks who ruled later also painted more paintings and made the temple an art gallery.
The temple's Moolavar Sri Rama, Seethapirathiyar, Lakshmana and Anjaneya sculptures are made of
sudhai(stucco). On the wall at the back of the moolavar, there are colourful idols of Lord Rama, Sita Devi on the right and Lakshmana on the left with Anjaneya bowing before Ram with floral decorations.

Rama River and Kadana River confluence in this town.
