Lord Shiva advised for Brahmadhanda a place similar to Kashi on request of the Devas.
Then the Brahmadhanda reached the sea and reached the confluence of the Tamiraparani river, and came across it and stopped at the top of the temple on the banks of the Marudur river. The dhanda was then worshipped there by the Devas and got boons. Lord Jupiter did not respect Indra, as a result he appointed Vishwaruban, the Asura Guru, as his Guru instead of Lord Jupiter. Indra came to know that Vishwaruban thought to perform a sacrifice so that the gods would perish and the Asuras would get well, so he cut off the head of Vishwaruban.
For killing his Guru and blaspheming Lord Jupiter, Indra suffered Brahma Viratti Dosha. Thirtha Khattam, where Indra and Indrani took a dip after performing many penances to get rid of this evil, is a riverbed in Tirupudai Marudur. This is called Surendra Moksha Theertha.

In this place, which was once a Maruda forest, the king came to hunt the deer and a deer ran and hid under the Maruda tree. The king was shocked to see the Shivalinga while cutting it with an axe in the place where the deer hid and built a temple at that place according to God’s word. The bruise caused by the axe is still visible on the God’s sculpture. There is also a soft small mark on the God’s sculpture where the arrow hit. Swami is anointed with Santanadi oil to heal the wound. Gomati Ambal Thirumeni is not sculpted by a sculptor but gives grace as Urudratchameni by herself.

When Karur Siddhar visited many places and came to visit Swami, he stood on the north bank of the Tamiraparani river when it was flooded, and the Tamiraparani river gave way when he called the God as the one who is standing in the middle among the fragrance of flowers.
When he came to the temple to see Swami, he was shocked to see that Swami was in a reclining position, Karur Siddhar asked the Lord why he was in this posture to which he replied saying he moved to listen to Karur Siddhar’s voice. Karurar also prayed to Swami to listen to the prayers of the devotees who were coming.

The base of the tree where the King saw the Lord can still be seen in the hall to the left of Lord Ganesha at the back of the temple.
